ASSASSIN: John Mayer in Manila

I like music because of the way it sounds.

At the risk of being redundant, music for me is about the notes and the melody. I spend money and brave the masses during concerts because I believe that it is the best way to discover someone and his/her music.

That being said, I have always been a fan of John Mayer's music since Room for Squares. His songs are in my ipod and I listen to them all the time. But I am not an "smart" music fan. I don't know anything about him except where Jennifer Aniston is concerned and I don't know about his awards or his influences. I have never seen his music video or watched his interviews. I barely know the titles of his songs even though I can sing along to all of them. I didn't aspire to get his ridiculously expensive front row tickets because I thought "Why pay to be nearer to him when all I'll see is him sitting down with his guitar." I might as well be in the cheap section since all I really wanted was to hear him perform live, to feel the purity of his talent and music. So while I have always loved his songs, it was only during the concert that I fell in love with the man behind the songs.

It was raining and umbrellas were open and raincoats were sticky in the humid weather but if there were any discomfort at all, people hid that with their very loud swooning and declaration of love, boys and girls alike, and the energy that flowed from the VIP section to the Gen Ad section.

I HAD NO IDEA HE WAS THAT HOT AND SEXY ON STAGE!

I swooned and died, only to be revived so I can scream out my overflowing emotions brought about by his talent and utter sexiness.

John Mayer is a snob. He doesn't try to establish rapport with his audience or please them by commenting on how wonderful their country is or how beautiful the people are. The truth is though, his fans are fanatics enough to not care at all. Witty comments or flirtatious lines were unnecessary because every note and strum emitted by John already sent them in a wild flurry of jumping and arms flailing about and screaming, singing at the top of their lungs. Every strum of his guitar and every note that came out of his mouth was an orgasmic palate of sexy. While Paramore still has the craziest and wildest audience, John Mayer comes in a very close and impressive second especially considering that his genre isn't for the fist-pumping type.

The LoveStoned concert blew me because of the raw talent that Timbaland showed but John Mayer's concert made me fall in love with him because of his passion for music. The solos were indulgent and it was so obvious that his audience or his band were no match for his deep captivation for his guitar. His guitar was like a jealous girlfriend that consumed his person fully and his performance betrayed his obsession with her. The concert sticks with me, and two days after I am still experiencing a John Mayer hangover because his zealousness for his music was infectious and beguiling. It haunts you and makes you want to listen to his songs again and again in pursuit of that thing, that spirit that continues to capture his obsession. You hope you find it and feel it so you can lose yourself in it too so much so that 50,000 people screaming around and for you will cease to exist.

I am so thankful I watched John Mayer perform live and I would again given another chance because he showed me simply what talent and passion is. Usher, (I have yet to write about his concert), is a fantastic performer because of what he does on stage, the lights, the smoke, the dancers and the rapport he establishes. But John Mayer is a musician first and foremost. There were no elaborate stage set-ups or backgrounds. No complicated light synchronizations or visual effects to back him up. He filled the stage with his band, his guitar and his overspilling passion for music. I cannot say anything about his songs because at this point, everybody already knows how beautiful and well-thought of his songs are. I hope everybody knows too of John Mayer's dedication to his craft because is that not what it's all about? To be able to do what you love most and to share them so that others too may come to appreciate and recognize what you love.
